Yoana Baraschi

Fashion Designer
New York City; hails from: Bucharest, Romania
Wearing: L’Agence cashmere tissue-knit topIAN stretch silk sweatpants, Gucci platforms

Fashion Icons: “I have many! Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor (especially in Cleopatra), Julie Christie, Brigitte Bardot in God Created The Woman, Bond girls, Dita von Teese."

Inspirations for her collections: “I have a love for vintage embroideries, textiles and the beauty of the female body. Also, having traveled to India over 60 times, I consider it my second home.  I travel there for inspiration, unique market finds and special textiles and stitching methods that translate directly into my collections.”

When she knew she wanted to be a designer: “The turning point came in 1999, when I began working as Creative Director for Betsey Johnson. I was heavily influenced by not only the business success the company had achieved, but also Betsey’s own originality and vision. It was this time period that allowed me the courage to live my own vision and believe that I could start my own collection.”

Designers she adores: Lanvin, Olivier Theyskens, Alber Elbaz

Expert advice:
1) I recommend that every woman dress for her own body type and personal taste rather than the trend of the moment.
2) Being a confident female is most important. I am trying to make women beautiful and not defined by age.
3) In terms of wardrobe, every woman should own a great blazer that can be easily worn over any ensemble to add a sophisticated touch without feeling too dressy.
